Why sustainable design matters
Did you know that it is estimated that over 80% of all product-related environmental impacts are determined during the design phase of a product? This is why thinking sustainable while designing matters.
SUSTAINABLE DESIGN = SYSTEMS THINKING
Sustainable design embraces systems thinking, a holistic approach. Thus, sustainable design considers the entire lifecycle of a design from material selection, and production methods to the recyclability or reusability of the end product or design
Sustainable design and eco-design, what is the difference?
Sustainable design seeks to minimize a product’s total carbon footprint, from its conception to its re-use.
Eco-design aims at reducing the environmental impact of products, including energy consumption throughout their entire life cycle.
Most of what we design is disposable and ends up as waste: marketing collateral, packaging, and promotional materials
Instead we can REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE.
By incorporating the principles of reducing waste, reusing design assets, and recycling materials whenever possible, our design can become more sustainable.
DIGITAL IS NOT GREEN
Digital technologies are responsible for 4% of global greenhouse gas emissions (2022 Global Enabling Sustainability Initiative).
Green Digital Design contemplates being energy-efficient, using renewable resources, and minimizing waste and carbon footprint.
